Lead Culinary Educator for 2018-2019 School Year

We’re seeking highly organized, self-motivated, and outgoing individuals to lead a duo and collaborate with partner aides in the preparation and delivery of Cook Play Live’s Bud elementary and Sprout middle school curricula in after-school programs in Mount Eden, Bronx NY 10452.


  • Prepare for and implement cooking portions of workshops, to children aged 8-10 (Bud) and 11-14 (Sprout), including hands-on food preparation and cooking, in accordance with program curricula

  • Be knowledgeable about origins, uses and/or health benefits of ingredients utilized; be able to communicate that knowledge to children.

  • Set up food preparation and cooking equipment, supplies, and educational materials for workshops

  • Maintain food safety, including cleaning and sanitation of all cooking equipment used in cooking activities

  • Manage classroom dynamics for a group of up to 25 children

  • Ensure integrity of programming, including adherence to Cook Play Live curriculum

  • Supervise data collection

  • Lead and supervise a team of two; collaborate with partner staff as necessary and appropriate

  • Ensure necessary materials are on site each week and purchase food for workshops

  • Track supplies inventory using provided checklists

  • Submit expense reports

  • Check-in regularly with supervisor


  • Knife skills and ability to execute basic cooking techniques required

  • Experience or training in culinary arts or cooking for large groups (15+) required

  • Experience educating or engaging in a low-income community-based setting required

  • Ability to work well with a wide variety of individuals, including children and adults

  • Experience in classroom management required

  • Dynamic personality and excellent presentation, interpersonal and communications skills

  • Places value on cultural awareness in a multi-ethnic community.

  • Ability to healthily adapt recipes to participants’ preferences.

  • Knowledge of or enthusiasm about food and nutrition issues as related to healthy living strongly preferred

  • ServSafe certification or successful completion of the NYC Food Protection course strongly preferred

  • Bilingual English/Spanish speaker strongly preferred

  • Physical Requirements: The position requires standing and walking for extended periods, and carrying heavy and bulky items

Required Availability:

  • Mondays from 3:30 pm to 6:00 pm from October 29 to November 26 when school is in session

  • Wednesdays from 2:45 pm to 5:15 pm when school is in session

  • Fridays from 3:30 pm to 6:00 pm when school is in session

Additional time may be required to prepare for program sessions.  Incremental shifts including participation in our Summer 2019 programs may be possible.
