Lead Culinary Educator for 2019-2020 School Year

We’re seeking highly organized, self-motivated, and outgoing individuals to lead a two-person team and collaborate with partner aides in the preparation and delivery of Cook Play Live’s healthy cooking curricula in out of school time (i.e. after-school) programs at various sites throughout South Bronx.

Responsibilities:

  • Prepare for and implement cooking portions of workshops, including hands-on food preparation and cooking, in accordance with program curricula

  • Be knowledgeable about origins, uses and/or health benefits of ingredients utilized; be able to communicate that knowledge to children and adults

  • Set up food preparation and cooking equipment, supplies, and educational materials for workshops

  • Maintain food safety, including cleaning and sanitation of all cooking equipment used in cooking activities

  • Manage classroom dynamics for a group of up to 25 children

  • Ensure integrity of programming, including adherence to Cook Play Live curriculum

  • Supervise data collection through the use of paper surveys

  • Lead and supervise a team of two; collaborate with partner staff as necessary and appropriate

  • Ensure necessary materials are on site each week and purchase food for workshops

  • Track supplies inventory using provided checklists

  • Submit expense reports

  • Check-in regularly with Program Manager

  • Suggest recipes as appropriate to reflect participants’ taste preferences, budget and curricula content

Qualifications:

  • Knife skills and ability to execute basic cooking techniques

  • Experience or training in culinary arts or cooking for large groups (20+)

  • Experience educating or engaging in a low-income community-based setting

  • Knowledge of and enthusiasm for food, flavor and nutrition issues as relates to healthy living

  • Ability to work well with a wide variety of individuals, including children and adults

  • Experience in classroom management

  • Dynamic personality and excellent presentation, interpersonal and communications skills

  • Aware of cultural differences and nuances in a multi-ethnic community

  • Ability to healthily adapt recipes to participants’ preferences

  • ServSafe certification or successful completion of the NYC Food Protection course strongly preferred

  • Bilingual English/Spanish speaker strongly preferred

  • Physical Requirements: The position requires standing and walking for extended periods, and carrying heavy and bulky items of up to 30 pounds

This position requires availability for approximately 2.5 hours / shifts on weekday afternoons (between 2:00 pm and 6:00 pm) and select Saturdays when NYC Department of Education schools are in session from September 2019 through June 2020. Additional time may be required to prepare for program sessions.
